Oakura Sand Dune Planting!
Wow what a great turn out we had to our Oakura Community Sand Dune Planting on Saturday the 6th of May.
We partnered with New Plymouth District Council to bring in a crew to plant 2200 Spinifex and Pingao plants on the sand dunes next to the Motor Camp Entrance.
Sand Dune restoration using native species is an important way of not only reducing erosion, but providing habitat for biodiversity. Spinifex (kowhangatara) and golden sand sedge (pingao) have amazing underground root systems, and long trailing runners above ground - to trap sand.
The planting that has already been done along the Oakura coast has been really effective in reducing the amount of erosion, the planting programme we took part in is intended to help beef up and build upon whats already there. We will extend further along the beach next winter!
The whole community got behind it!!! A massive thanks to our supporters and sponsors: Emerge Beauty and Wellbeing - sponsored the Sausage Sizzle with yummy Green Meadows Beef Sausages, and the grand spot prize of a massage voucher
The Yoga Space; High Tide Coffee, Vertigo and Kris White Art for the spot prize vouchers.
Thanks also to McDonald Real Estate for the gazebo, and Oakura Beach Motor Camp for the loan of the BBQ. A massive thanks to Katie Oneill for taking some wonderful photos for us!
Lorella from Rethinking Plastic Revolution did a guess the number of straws in the container for some of the spot prizes. These straws have all been collected from beaches by Lorella. There were 526! We also did some biodiversity quiz questions to hand out the rest.
Our next planting is on the 4th of June at Tapuae, just north of Oakura along SH45. See you there!
